It's Tuesday! You know what that means.
Sam's Three Things About NCIS 7.07: ( Endgame )
3a. What's up with the sudden McVoiceover? We've never had a voiceover on this show. I hate voiceovers. This one was better than the Mohinderlogues from Heroes, but still. Voiceovers are a slippery fucking slope. |

So, in my spare time, I've been mainlining a new TV show: Bones.
I've found that I tend to function best this way -- let the show build up a few seasons' worth of steam and then have at it all at once. I watched the entire first season of Heroes up-to-the-hiatus in one fell swoop, and I would never have survived SGA if I'd tried to watch it as it aired (should be noted: did not survive season five).
I'm about 2/3 of the way through season two. While I enjoy the show, I have some issues with the inconsistency with which Brennan is characterised and written. Don't get me wrong, I like her, but I can sense that they really wanted to go Pretender on her and just didn't have the balls.
When I started watching I knew a little bit about her character and assumed that she wasn't current on pop culture because she'd been raised in some kind of Amish commune. This would have made more sense, given how she's written, because I don't care how much of a geek you are, if you grew up in America in the eighties, by the time you're fifteen YOU KNOW WHAT CLUE IS. Also, she remarks that "I don't have many clear memories of my mother" which is bullshit, her mother disappeared when she was fifteen. So I suspect they intended to have her parents vanish when she was, say, four, and just messed it up.
ANYWAY. I'm not one to nitpick, but this is pretty bizarre for a major character. The only way I can reconcile my sensible view of reality with the writing of Temperance Brennan is to form something similar to my Tony DiNozzo Is A Serial Killer theory.
( The Grand Unified Theory Of Bones )
IT ALL MAKES SENSE.
Incidentally, ( regarding Zach... ) |

I have done something utterly wretched to my shoulder. I don't know what precisely I've done, but I was drying myself off this morning and pulled the towel the wrong way and had sudden sharp pains in my trapezius. I can't actually hold my arm in any way that doesn't cause pain. I'm torn between seeing if my massage therapist has an emergency opening today, or sucking it up and lying down on a heating pad for a while when I get home. The latter is much more appealing, mainly because it means less walking and that I get to lie down a whole lot.
Downside: I can't fall asleep because I might set myself on fire.
The Cafe Job Fair is still getting nibbles occasionally, which is fun to see. Lots of good resources in the comments; if I were a better person with less on my plate I would totally be compiling a resource list. But frankly considering I'm having trouble making my muscles function properly, I think it's commendable I'm at work at all.
I did have a good time with R last night, playing Wheel and catching up on news. He's invited me to drive down to Indiana with him and stay at his parents' place for Thanksgiving, which on the one hand could be LOLARIOUS TIMES but on the other -- well, I have a five day weekend, and I'm an introvert of the classic kind, who actually draws energy and joy from being alone. I really was looking forward to five days of solitude, I was excited about that in the way some people get excited about going to a really good party.
So, I don't know. I'm trying to figure out how to explain to him that I love him like a brother but I VANT TO BE ALOHNE. |

Hey, LiveJournal legal brain trust: riddle me this. You know that guy in Cleveland, Anthony Sowell, who's suspected of being this horrible serial killer? They've found the remains of at least 11 people in his house, but he's only being charged with 5 murders.
What's the story? Do they think the other six bodies were there when he moved in? I mean, I know a D.A. will only charge the crimes he thinks he can get a conviction for, but it seems like if you can prove the dude killed five people, it shouldn't be hard to convince a jury to tack on the other six corpses you found in his house. Or is it some kind of paperwork thing, where they've only charged him with five murders so far?
Your help would be appreciated in clarifying this matter. |

R picked me up from work today, which was cool, and over burgers and fries for dinner we watched the news, because nothing compliments a fresh hamburger like low-level rage. :D
At one point I was talking about something, I don't recall what, and I said, "...a group of fundies."
"Fundies?" he asked.
"Yeah, you know, fundies."
"Are those the people who dress up like animals?"
AND THEN I LOLED.
"No," I said. "Those are furries. You, uh, shouldn't mix those two up." |

I am proud of many things tonight, including the beautiful and properly-made Nanaimo bars I concocted earlier this evening (it was an issue of butter-to-graham-cracker, solved it now). I am also proud of having hung a bunch of new posters and the cool art deco wall clock mum sent me.
Mostly I am proud of you guys though, for stepping up and putting yourself out there in the Cafe Job Post and also for going back to it and giving each other so much help. We have over 600 comments on the post, and hopefully people have a little bit of hope and a lot of career guidance they didn't have before. GOOD LUCK, JOB SEEKERS, and thank you to everyone who commented to send them links and advice.
I did drown in comments a little bit, but it was totally worth it.
And now, to bed! This week won't suck as much as the last one did, I feel it in my unbroken bones. |

| | grizzly bear, too little too late | ] | Guys, it's taking every ounce of self control in my body not to flame this girl on Facebook: I knew her in middle school and it turns out she grew up uberconservative and I'm usually lolwtf at the things she says -- handwringing over the flu shot and the fact that schools ask for students' race on forms -- but she just posted this link with the comment "Tragic." YES IT'S SO TRAGIC that more women are buying houses and getting PhDs and reading books and earning a living. Also SHE IS IN graduate school AND the workforce wtf wtf wtf.
Speaking of conservative politics, I just found out that the new governor of Virginia, Bob McDonnell is my cousin. (Yours too, ke_rose_ne.) My middle name's even McDonnell. Weird! Too bad we're on completely opposite ends of the political spectrum. My dad's beside himself with excitement though, after realizing Why That Guy Looks So Much Like Uncle Jack.
I just got home from a cupcake contest party and I'm going to explooooode. I didn't win, but I did get nominated in all the categories -- and I got to eat a bajillion cupcakes, so I'll take it. Before that, we went to my boyfriend's mom's art show, and yesterday we went on a 4 mile bike ride and out to dinner with friends and on Friday I made apple cake and we got Thai food and walked around Georgia Tech and went to Shabbat dinner and then a game night, and this week I also voted and went to a microfinance lecture and Spanish class and a networking event and a craft night and made banana bread and mac and cheese. Phew! Also last month cheapmetaphor came and visited and it was awesome (picnics in the park! Forever 21!), and this week annakovsky is coming to town! What more could I ever possibly need? |

Good morning, Cafe!
On Friday night I posted a call for jobseekers to post their locations, skills, and needs in the Cafe as a way to help some of our little community find jobs. I screened comments because I wanted as many people as possible to get to comment, without the latecomers being unseen because the moment had passed.
I've had responses from scientists, artists, teachers, the spouses and children of loved ones with no job, and people who want to be members of the Ninja Office Admin guild, among others. If you are looking for someone to employ, there is someone in that post for you!
I've unscreened the comments, so you are now free to check out The Cafe Talent Pool. It's pretty impressive.
Please go have a look at the post and see what advice, links, knowledge, etc you can offer. Especially since if nobody comments it makes me look like an asshole. :D And you never know, you might make a new friend.
Jobseekers, you're not exempt from that request -- you may not have a job but you have skills and knowledge and you should know each other, the better to help each other out. And if you missed the original post it's not too late to comment.
Have fun, guys, and be excellent to each other!
